Few indicators highlight the Democratic Party’s current political challenges more clearly than voter perceptions of which party best represents the middle class — a question that has historically favored Democrats.
However, in a recent CNN poll of registered voters, the response to that question was evenly split between the two major parties, a result that surprised political analyst Harry Enten.
Enten pointed out that in 1989, Democrats held a 23-point lead on this issue. That margin narrowed to 17 points in 2016, shrank to just four points by 2022, and now stands at a dead heat.
“This tells us more about the Democratic Party’s struggles than almost anything else,” Enten said, emphasizing that their long-standing identity as the party of the middle class appears to be fading.
He added that Donald Trump and the Republican Party have effectively seized that position, erasing what was once a clear Democratic advantage.
Is that because Trump is a better communicator than Democrats - the party of Hollywood and Big Media? Or because his America First agenda of middle-class tax cuts, energy independence, smaller and smarter government, a nation of secure borders and legal immigration are what the American people were demanding?
