On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld South Carolina's prohibition on funding Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services, delivering a victory for conservatives seeking to cut state financial support to the abortion provider.
In a 6-3 decision, the justices, led by Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch’s majority opinion, affirmed the state’s right to block Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion procedures, including cancer screenings and other health services.
Planned Parenthood, widely recognized for abortion services, often emphasizes its broader healthcare offerings amid public criticism. The group’s lawsuit contended that excluding its clinics from South Carolina’s Medicaid program violated patients’ rights to select their healthcare providers.
The organization has faced ongoing challenges following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion.
