Bill Maher called it jealousy. Allie Beth Stuckey called it coveting. Only one of them knew where it leads.

If Socialism Is About Compassion, Why Does It Always Start With Somebody Else’s Stuff?
Why It Matters
Socialism is having a moment with young voters. Bill Maher, no friend of the church, just explained why. Then a Christian mom finished his diagnosis.
The Big Picture
In a “New Rule” on HBO’s Real Time, Maher pointed to France’s riots over underfunded schools and argued the money went to retirees instead. His summary: forget “eat the rich,” “eat grandma.”
By the Numbers
6×: What America spends on each person over 65 versus each person under 25, per Maher.
About $2,000: The average monthly Social Security check. That’s about a full-time Burger King paycheck.
16 to under 3: Workers paying in for every retiree, in 1950 versus today.
What They’re Saying
Maher: Young people want socialism “because they’re jealous that the older people have it.”
Maher again: “Everything socialists want, we already have.” Medicare is universal health care. Social Security is universal basic income.
Allie Beth Stuckey, host of Relatable: Two of the Ten Commandments, don’t steal and don’t covet, assume “something is yours.”
The Other Side
Maher thinks the system just needs a tweak. Washington patched Social Security in 1983. It got sick again because nobody diagnosed the disease.
Meanwhile
You’re not jealous of grandma. You’re jealous of a fry cook with a bad hip.
The Bottom Line
An atheist called it jealousy. A Christian called it coveting. Same diagnosis. And capitalism didn’t build that six-to-one gap. Washington’s budget did. If socialism is compassion, will the people selling it be the first to give up their stuff?
The Faith Check
Socialism sells itself as compassion. James 3:16 says what it actually runs on: “Where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” Hello, France. A government that runs on envy doesn’t just go broke. It turns the young against the old, and everybody blames capitalism.

Bernie Sanders and AOC keep telling the rich to pay their fair share. Congratulations, kids. You’re the rich now.
