President Trump is set to sign an executive order making English the official language of the United States.
This order would establish a national language for the first time in U.S. history. It would also overturn former President Bill Clinton’s August 2000 directive, which required agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide services for those with limited English proficiency, according to a fact sheet shared with CNBC.
The White House released a fact sheet stating the purpose of this executive order is to, “promote unity, establish efficiency in the government and provide a pathway to civic engagement.”
Why does this matter? A common language unifies a nation. It’s how we connect and communicate effectively. Language is culture, and culture is language. Politically, instead of diluting our national identity to accommodate every culture under the sun, this move invites everyone to embrace the core values of the United States. It’s inclusive in that way.
I’ve always thought the mantra “diversity is our strength” is a bit misleading. Business Communication 101 will tell you diversity often brings conflict. Diversity only works when there’s a unifying goal—like a team with varied skills rallying around a clear project that benefits everyone. That’s when it’s a strength.
A national language also builds a national identity. The push for multiculturalism can highlight our differences, stirring conflict and watering down who we are. But one language? That emphasizes what we share, pulling us together.
Look at Paul in the Bible—he knew how to use language to fulfill the mission Jesus gave him. To the Roman commander, he spoke Greek, shocking the guy who pegged him as an uneducated troublemaker. To the Jewish crowd ready to kill him, he switched to Aramaic, calming them down. And while we don’t know if he spoke Latin to Caesar, he definitely leveraged his Roman citizenship to get the Gospel in front of the most powerful man alive back then.
Think about this, too: as more people learn English, American Christians have had more chances to share their faith. A common language has amplified the Gospel.
Those are my quick thoughts on Trump’s executive order making English the official language of the nation.
