On Day One of his Presidency, President Donald Trump signed an executive order defining a person's sex strictly as "male or female," directing federal agencies to use these categories on official documents like forms and identification cards.

This directive will also impact federal prison policies concerning inmates who identify as transgender.

The decision arrives in the context of a broader national conversation about gender identity, particularly debates over whether transgender women should participate in women's sports or use women's facilities. Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump frequently criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and the Biden administration for promoting progressive gender policies in areas such as sports, education, and other public sectors.

The executive order mandates the elimination of references to gender identity ideology in all government guidance, communications, policies, and official documents. Federal agencies are instructed to disregard the idea that individuals can change their gender when interpreting sex discrimination laws.

Additionally, the order will end the policy of housing biological males who identify as female alongside women in federal prisons. It also stops the requirement to use "preferred pronouns," meaning individuals in government-run schools that receive federal funding will not be compelled to conform to specific gender identity practices.
