Recent claims by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic suggesting that Trump administration officials exchanged text messages containing "war plans" have faced strong rebuttals from prominent figures. Worse, once Goldberg released the rest of the encrypted group chat text (after claiming they were classified) it became clear that indeed there were no 'war plans' exchanged. In fact, the conversation was similar to a readout that would be given to the media to report on military strikes conducted by an administration.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz dismissed the allegations, emphasizing the absence of sensitive information in the messages. "No locations. No sources & methods. NO WAR PLANS. Foreign partners had already been notified that strikes were imminent. BOTTOM LINE: President Trump is protecting America and our interests," Waltz asserted.
Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, criticizing Goldberg's reporting. "It’s very clear Goldberg oversold what he had. But one thing in particular really stands out. Remember when he was attacking Ratcliffe for blowing the cover for a CIA agent? Turns out Ratcliffe was simply naming his chief of staff," Vance wrote on X, highlighting what he saw as a pattern of exaggerated claims.
The responses underscore the pushback from Trump allies who argue that the claims lack substantiation. As the controversy continues, further clarification may emerge regarding the messages in question and the nature of their contents.
It remains a suspicious mystery how an avowed Trump-hating journalist with deep ties to Washington, D.C. would "accidentally" be added to an encrypted chat. As the editor of The Atlantic, Mr. Goldberg has a track record of pushing and promoting alleged hoaxes. (The Putinization of America, Trump Is Speaking Like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini).
Goldberg and The Atlantic have yet to respond to the criticism.
